New York City's Health Department released the following guidance for people who recently traveled to China, Iran, Italy, Japan or South Korea -- or for anyone who experiences fever, cough or shortness of breath:

Stay home do not travel or go to work or school while sick

Go to a health care provider and tell them about your travel history

o   If you do not have a health care provider or insurance, call 311

Avoid contact with others

Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available

Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands

Wear Mask in enclosed area like supermarket, drugstore, bank, buildings (added by me)

Keep at least 6 feet in social distancing (update)

The entrances and elevator buttons should be disinfected constantly. If not, please wash your hands after touching those area. (added by me)

Any received packages, wait a few days before bringing them into the house.

The New Jersey State Department of Health has established a 24-hour coronavirus hotline to answer questions: 800-222-1222. New York has a similar hotline set up: 888-364-3065.

3/15/2020: New York's first positive case was announced on Sunday, March 1; the state's first death was announced nearly two weeks later, on March 14. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has since declared a state of emergency to clear the way for more testing, purchases of more supplies and hiring of more workers.

New Jersey, which was the first in the tri-state area to report a COVID-19-related death, is also in a state of emergency.

3/14/2020: More than 475 tri-state residents have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, and health officials caution the number of confirmed infected will rise as the capacity for local and state testing increases. The vast majority of the people who have been tested, though, have been negative.

New York's first positive case was announced on Sunday, March 1. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has since declared a state of emergency to clear the way for more testing, purchases of more supplies and hiring of more workers.

New Jersey, which reported its first death Tuesday, is also in a state of emergency.

Here are the latest number of cases:
